Building codes and design standards seem to be ever changing due to hurricane design guidelines. As a Registered Professional Engineer, owner Dwayne Smith makes it his personal mission to stay ahead of the design standards. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Smart Home Alabama, a non-profit organization whose mission is to better educate the building professionals, builders, and public about the requirements for building as per hurricane guidelines and the tangible and intangible benefits of such construction. In many cases, constructing to Hurricane Design Standards has minimal impacts to the total cost of construction; however, it has the major benefit of increasing the number of insurance carriers that will underwrite a homeowner’s insurance policy, which significantly reduces the cost of insurance.
